Evaluation:

To evaluate, this project was something that I really enjoyed getting my teeth into. I have not created a proper comic before, but I am familiar with zines and enjoy creating them. Looking at ‘Maus’ by Art Spiegelman I was inspired early on to create a narrative that had more than one layer. Spiegelman tells his own story, portraying his relationship with his father, as well as him interviewing his father about his time as a holocaust survivor during WW2. This made me realise that when telling someone else’s story, in particular my Grandad’s I can draw from my own experiences of him retelling the story. This creates a double layer. Maus made me think about the importance of perspective and how to make a story more interesting. ‘The Times I Knew I Was Gay’ by Eleanor Crewes also inspired me and prevented me  from getting a creative block. I thought that I was going to create a comic that was in a similar style to ‘Maus’ using standard comic boxes. Reading this graphic novel made me realise that you can still tell a graphic story unconventionally, using a more fluid narrative that is not chronological. This research was really important to my final piece as I was really inspired by their work.

I feel proud of my final piece. Riso printing was a good idea, as it works well to carry the pencil marks and the images I drew. The text was successful, tracing an existing font enabled me to fit the theme of hand drawn elements in my final piece. This creates a sense of unity and finish. The boxes I drew were slightly wonky, so that I could keep with the hand drawn feel.

I really tried hard with using different perspectives in the drawings. If I was to carry this project further, or re draw elements of it, I would change a few things. I think that I would make the zine longer, and tell more anecdotes from my Grandad’s adventure. If I had more time, I would have experimented with colour, perhaps using one more colour as well as blue. However, as I was not familiar with using a Risograph – I wanted to try one colour. Next time I will definitely experiment with different colours as I am more confident with riso and it is something I am now interested in. I would also work more with speech bubbles and perspective, to create a more layered story, and make the switch between my own narrative and my Grandad’s narrative more obvious.

Overall I have been really interested in this project as it felt very personal and my Grandad’s past is something I have always been intrigued by. I also had plenty of references, ie photographs from my Grandad and the ability to interview him and ask him questions. I liked that I could draw from my own experiences with my Grandad and could re imagine all the stories I had heard growing up.

Getting Feedback from my Grandad

For Christmas I gave my Grandad the zine that I made as a present. I gave him a blue ink on white paper copy. He was really happy with it and got a little bit teary. I asked him for feedback and he said that he thought I had recreated his story really well in a small book. Also he said that he liked the artwork and could recognise himself easily. My Nan said that she liked the second to last drawing of him with a beard – as he sent this photograph back to her when he was out there. My family also gave me good feedback, my brother saying that he thought the way I had drawn the boxes round the drawings was effective – keeping the lines ever so slightly wonky, creating a real sense of hand made and within my style. My Dad said that he liked the way that I had used a real font, but instead of keeping it super neat, again it was hand drawn and placed ever so slightly wonky to keep fluency throughout.

 

Prototype

Prototyping My Zine

Before printing my zine using a Risograph, I decided that I needed to create a prototype before committing to printing. I scanned in my photocopies, and used indesign to place them into a file. I made sure the pages were grey-scaled and at least 300dpi. Also I made sure that all of the files were in the same document as the indesign file to make it easier. Each page I saved as a TIF file to place onto my indesign document. After placing the pages into the indesign file I made sure that there was bleed. I saved the file as a PDF without compression, ready to print.

Afterward I test printed my file, and folded it.

I am really pleased with the prototype, and I am excited to finally get it printed properly and print it!

Adding text to my zine

19th October 2019

Some of the feedback that I received from my critique was that the text was slightly too rough, and could do with being neatened up. In order to create a more polished finish to my zine, I decided to create an alphabet that I would use instead of hand drawing the text out each time. I picked Helvetica, as I like the font, I think it is bold and simple – therefore easy to read.

I traced the font onto paper using paper, and then I photocopied it in order for it to be darker, then I scanned it in. I am pleased with the font as it is bold, and I think that it is easy to read. This is important as the text needs to compliment the imagery.

Final Crit and Exhibition

14th October 2019

Today I had my final critique for Identities and Place. I presented with a PowerPoint as it helps me to prompt myself when I talk about my work. I felt looking at other people’s work was really interesting as everyone had interpreted the brief differently; some people’s stories were funny and some were really moving. The feedback I received for the work I showed was really helpful as people were constructive with their criticism. My peers were really honest and their comments were really thoughtful!

Mini Exhibition:

The exhibition was really small as not many had hung up work. I hung up bits of my process and my tests. It was interesting to see how other people had interpreted the brief; for example someone had made a gif of a girl diving into a pool which I thought was really fun.

The Times I Knew I Was Gay

The Times I Knew I Was Gay – Eleanor Crewes

I encountered this graphic story after I had a comic workshop with Eleanor Crewes herself in my first year at LCC. She talked about her novel in the session as well as giving us advice in creating comics. One of the things she said was that writing lists is always a good place to start when creating a comic, as it allows you to arrange your thoughts.

Furthermore, she made me realise that a graphic story/comic does not have to be confined in boxes like a traditional comic. I feel that reminding myself of her work was a big eureka moment in my journey through this project.

Up until I picked up ‘The Times I Knew I Was Gay’ again I thought that I was going to create a chronological comic strip of my Grandad’s experiences in Australia. However looking at Crewes’ work it made me realise that I don’t have to. ‘The Times I Knew I Was Gay’ focuses on the moments that Crewes looks back on and realises that they were pivotal moments leading up to her realisation of her sexuality. The narrative ranges from her first communion to her first date with a girl which is a good ten years. I felt that the story of my Grandad didn’t have to be a standard comic – I was trying to work in a way that I do not enjoy/feel good at. When I realised that I could create a zine like format I knew that I would enjoy and be good at I felt more creative. I took inspiration from the way that Crewes drew her illustrations. One of the reasons I was drawn to her work was her use of pencil. 

Crewes’ pages are quite fluid – she does not restrict drawings into boxes – this is how I enjoy drawing, with a more free feel. She uses speech bubbles also when needed. The grey pencil creates a sense of nostalgia and the past, which I like.

I love the use of line Crewes uses in this page, specifically her use of negative space. The simple linework contrasted with the harsh scratchy pencil creates an interesting texture. Furthermore, her use of hand drawn text keeps the zine feel to the pages (before being a graphic novel The Times I Knew I Was Gay was a zine). This is something that I want to do with my own zine, keep a hand drawn feel to the text – but keep it neat and readable.
